Roma Colleges for Advanced Studies

The Semmelweis University Institute of Mental Health has been conducting research on students enrolled in the Roma Colleges for Advanced Studies Network since 2011. The aim of the Colleges is to support Roma students in their academic pursuits, and the specialized colleges provide scholarships, training, housing, and a community of fellow students to help them achieve this goal. I joined the research team in 2019 and have been involved in the analysis and publication of existing data as well as the design and implementation of future studies.

Our joint publications explore various topics related to the unique experiences of Roma students. These students are often caught between two cultures and two social circles – they come from families with lower education levels, but attend university surrounded by non-Roma students with higher education. Some students strive to balance these two groups, while others eventually distance themselves from one or the other. The Roma Colleges for Advansed Studies can serve as a bridge between the two, providing a community of highly educated Roma classmates.

Our research has examined the life stories, family backgrounds, relationships, networks, and friendships of Roma students.
